Bexley Cricket Club colts’ section held its second annual festival, when 16 teams took part from different clubs and schools from the Kent and south-east London areas.

The early rounds began at 9.45am, with the winning team from each mini league progressing to the next round.

Two trophies were played for, the Manor Way Trophy and the Plate.

Games were played under the normal rules, although for this event a compound ball was used. On smaller pitches and for safety reasons, it provides the safe al-ternative to the usual hard ball.

A club spokesman said: “To see in more than 170 youngsters taking part in such event was a pleasure and proves that the game of cricket is on the up, especially in this part of the country.

“The games were played competitively but in good spirit. An all-day barbecue, bar, speed-bowling competition and other attractions all added to the fun.

“The day ran smoothly with one just interruption for a heavy shower and ended with the cup final between Bexley and Hartley, a repeat of last year’s decider, with Hartley retaining their trophy. The Plate was won by Sidcup CC, who beat Old Dunstonians.

“This day would not be possible without the effort and enthusiasm of Sue Towers. Any team interested in taking part in the 2004 festival, should call Bexley Cricket Club on 01322 524159.”
