A long-awaited move to new premises has proved a knockout success for Bexley Amateur Boxing Club.

In the first week alone more than 30 regular members were attending each of the three nights a week sessions, with as well as many newcomers wanting to find out more about boxing and keep-fit classes now being run at North Cray Community Centre, in Bedens Road.

Formerly known as Danson Youth Amateur Boxing Club, the group moved from its premises at Danson Youth Centre, and set up at its new home on Monday 2 June.

Funding has included a £5,000 grant from Bexley Council towards equipment, as well as financial help from Cray Meadow Community Forum Chest. An application for a £3,000 grant has also been made to London and Quadrant and a further application for £5,000 has been, made to the National Lottery’s Awards For All scheme. The results of both applications should be known next month.

John Gristey, the senior club coach, said, “We were at Danson Youth Centre for 22 years, so this has been a big move for us, but as a result we are now independent and able to expand.

“We welcome everyone, girls and boys alike. Who knows, the next youngster through our doors could be the next world champion!” The club has also introduced a new boxercise keep-fit class for adults, which is being run by one of its up-and-coming talents, Charles Brahmbhatt, 19, a qualified fitness instructor who boxes for England.

Bexley Council Leader, Cllr Chris Ball said: “I am delighted that Bexley Amateur Boxing Club has settled so well into its new home. Sport and exercise are very important and Bexley Council supports all moves to make it more readily available to the general public. I am sure North Cray residents and those from further afield will make good use of the opportunities offered by the club.

“The arrival of the club will allow young people to do something which has street credibility and at the same time keep them out of trouble. The keep-fit classes are also good news for adults who want to be more active.” The club meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at North Cray. Community Centre, Bedens Road, formerly North Cray Infants Schoo, when the programme of events is: Kid Gloves (nine-15 years) 5.30-6.30pm; seniors (15 years and over) 6.30-8pm; boxercise (keep-fit for adults) 8.30-9.45pm.
