A PAIR of boxing stars of the future have triumphed at the national final of the Royal Navy ABA Golden Gloves Championships.

Swanley's Albert Lee Junior and Adam Middleton from Belvedere won their final bouts to take the gold medals last weekend in Knottingley.

Dating back to 1920, the Golden Gloves has built up a reputation as being the top competition for young boxers aged 12 to 14.

Lee, 12, who trains at Eltham ABC, weighs in at 30kg.

His father Albert Lee said: "I'm extremely proud because he has done so well. He trains very hard and I'm overwhelmed."

Middleton, also aged 12, trains at Nemesis ABC and weighs in at 36 kg.

He said: "I could have worked a bit harder. I was disappointed with the way I boxed as I was really nervous but I'm over the moon to have won."

This year will be the second of a five-year partnership between the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and the ABAE (Amateur Boxing Association England).

Royal Navy Captain Naval Recruiting Captain Chris Alcock OBE said: "We're proud to continue our support for the Golden Gloves and Junior ABA Championships.

"This year's events were a great success with some really tenacious bouts taking place at all levels.

"The focus, determination and fitness shown by the young boxers reflected brilliantly the core values of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines."
