Adam Gemili has qualified for the 200m semi-final in Rio.

The Blackheath and Bromley Harriers star sprinter, 22, clocked a time of 20.20 in his heat to cross the winning line in second.

Gemili, a former pupil at Dartford Grammar School, said: "I tried to run it as best as I could and not as hard as I could. I've qualified and l'm happy.

“The body is in a great place and I'm excited to compete with these guys.

“Today was all about qualification. I wanted to win but it was a tough lane. I’m confident I’ll improve.”

Meanwhile, reigning Olympic champion and world superstar Usain Bolt cruised through to the semi-finals in a time of 20.28.

While the Jamaican’s time was slower than Gemili’s, Bolt barely broke a sweat with no athlete in the field able to push him.

“I’m a little bit tired now,” Bolt said after the heat win.

“The 200m is my favourite event so that’s why I get more nervous. But it’s a good start and I’m happy.”
