There were mixed fortunes for two of Blackheath & Bromley Harriers Athletic Club’s star sprinters at Birmingham Diamond League meeting.

Adam Gemili admits he did not have the greatest of races during his 10.29sec sixth place finish in men’s 100m.

The 29-year-old former footballer paid the ultimate price for his poor start which eventually saw him playing catch up as Kim Collins clinched a 10.11 victory.

“The race itself didn't was not great and I stumbled a bit at the start,” said Gemili, the current European 200m champion. “It was very hard to get back into the race.

“I didn't try to push it as hard as I did last year because I was out for the season then. These meets are good for development but the major championships are where you want to be at your best.”

Gemili will head to the Birmingham Alexander Stadium for the all-important Olympic Trials, which is also part of the British Championships on June 24 to 26.

“I'm at a different stage of the season to a lot of the guys in the field,” he added.

“They are well into their seasons whereas I only started last week. The race sharpness will come, my body is in a great place.”

Dina Asher-Smith reached the women’s 100m final but could only manage fourth in a time of 11.22.

And the 20-year-old, who is currently ranked third in British women’s 100m standings, was happy to mix in with some of the world’s elite on the sun-drenched Alexander Stadium track.

“I was delighted to be able to execute two races and compete against the best athletes in the world,” said the Orpington-born sprinter. “It was a privilege to compete against them here.

“My body feels good and I am in one piece and I feel as though I can be pushing on to where I was last year.

“We are taking each race as it goes and focusing on recovery.”
