Leigh Haworth believes Star Kickboxing’s recent title wins is proof that hard work pays off.

The Gravesend gym enjoyed another superb night at the Hastings Centre in early April with their fighters claiming four wins and three titles.

Haworth, who runs the club with his son Paul, insists it feels as though they are on a roll with several competitors making big strides in their disciplines.

He said: “We are doing so well and our fighters are doing us proud. We seem to be on a roll at the moment and we are running out of places to hang the belts.

“We knew we had a few really tough fights in Hastings – title fights are never straightforward so you can’t go in presuming you’re going to win.

“But to come away with four wins was just unbelievable, everyone was ecstatic.”

First up for the local gym was George Savage, a 9-year-old taking part in his very first fight.

“George came with a lot of support and performed brilliantly,” Howarth said. “His opponent had several title belts to his name but George beat him which was incredible and a real achievement.”

Dartford’s Hayley Ward was next on the card and the 19-year-old, competing in the 52kg division, bagged the British Flyweight ICO title with an unanimous decision after the five-round contest.

Haworth, 64, says the upcoming fighter has a big future ahead of her.

“Against an experienced fighter she was exceptional,” the coach said. “We was expecting a proper war but Hayley was the sharper and more accurate fighter.

“Given her age she certainly has a big future.”

After 77.5km fighter Sergejs Fedins also beat his opponent with a third-round knockout, Reece Chuter finished the night off in style to claim the British ICO Super Middleweight title.

Chuter came out firing and dispatched of his opponent in the first round.

Haworth said: “Reece is a very fast and furious fighter – he came strongly and knocked him out in the first round.

“The boy did not know what planet he was on.”

Star Kickboxing is gaining a strong reputation nationally and Haworth admits the club has a stream of momentum pushing the fighters on.

“These wins show all the hard work from Paul and I pays off – we work very hard and are starting to get very well known in England,” he added.

“We have six titles to our name now and that shows how far the gym is progressing.

“Our style of training is tough and we work them hard but it clearly works. We are doing really well at the moment but need to maintain our high standards.

“All our fighters have got massive futures ahead of them and we are happy to be a part of it.”
