Bromley boxer Martin Hillman says winning the Featherweight International Challenge Belt would provide his career with a timely boost.

The 25-year-old fighter will face Hungarian David Hoppal at the Prince Regent Hotel on Feburary 20, with the winner claiming the coveted belt.

Hillman has won five of his seven professional fights and insists the ranking points on offer against Hoppal could boost his fledgling career greatly.

He said: “It would certainly be a very proud moment for me - it would give my career a big boost.

“A win would get me up the rankings and hopefully put me in contention for a few big fights.”

Despite admitting knowing little about his international opponent, the former Darrick Wood pupil believes he is in great shape going into the clash.

“I’m confident of course, I feel good and training has gone really well,” Hillman said.

“My opponent is a strong fighter, I’m aware that it’s going to be a hard fight. He’s not coming to get rolled over that’s for sure.

“I don’t know too much about him. I actually prefer not to know because in the past I’ve overthought my opponent rather than concentration on my game.”

Hillman, who started boxing at the age of 12, comes from a local boxing family with two of his uncles having represented England on several occasions.

His uncle, Albert Hillman, also claimed the Southern Area title in the 1970s.

The super-featherweight prospect, who has previously trained at the Eltham ABC gym and Body Shots in Crayford, struggled with reoccurring injuries as a young fighter.

“I suffered with injuries heavily but I have thankfully got over that now,” he said.

“It’s just about taking care of yourself. I’m feeling strong and I’ve been sparring well – this guy is coming to win but I’m ambitious and my trainer and manager are confident I can beat him.

“I would like to thank everyone for their continued support – it’s greatly appreciated.”

Despite training twice a day, six days a week, Hillman works as a mechanic in Bromley alongside his boxing.
