Bexleyheath’s Ben Hodge has won the Trent Valley Kart Club junior rookie championship at the prestigious Paul Fletcher International track in Grantham.
The Hurtsmere School pupil has flourished since being introduced to karting at the age of eight.
Despite competing against far larger teams with more funds to spend on the cars, Ben came sixth in the overall championship which races every month at the same venue.
“We are all just immensely proud of Ben and his achievement,” Mum Lorraine said.
“It’s a really tough championship against drivers who, generally, have bigger budgets than us.

“There’s some really strong teams with a lot of money but our situation is basically just Ben and his Dad.
“That’s why we are so proud – he performed so well and had an older, second-hand car. Being awarded the rookie of the season award was the culmination of months of hard work.”
Ben travelled to the Lincolnshire venue every month and Mrs Hodge, 47, admitted it was often difficult to watch her son in action.
She said: “I can’t watch the start because there can be a bit of bother at the first bend. It is hands over your eyes stuff. But after that I’m usually fine.
“Mixing with the big boys was always going to be tough but he held his own.
“He’s quite shy and reserves, he doesn’t boast about it at school. He just absolutely loves racing and anything motor sport.”
