Orpington Gymnastics Tumbler Freddie Lomax returned from the Loule Cup in Portugal last week having won a gold medal for Great Britain - his highest achievement in his eight year gymnastics career.

The 13-year-old prodigy has trained with Team GB for four years, regularly attending training camps at the English Institute of Sport in Lillieshall, Shropshire.

Freddie also spends at least 14 hours training at Bromley Valley Gymnastics Club in St Paul’s Cray every week.

The Loule event was attended by no less than 28 countries across the three disciplines of Tumbling, Trampolining and Double Mini-Trampoline.

Freddie qualified on the Thursday in first place and kept his composure amidst the huge pressure in the arena, tumbling last in the 13-14 age group final to clinch the gold medal.

Freddie, who attends Darrick Wood School in Orpington, was ecstatic to claim the prized medal.

Parents Dave and Sam Lomax travelled to Portugal to watch their youngest son compete.

“We were trying not to think about it but we knew that a medal was achievable,” Mr Lomax said.

“And then after qualifying so well it was clear a gold medal was even possible.

“Watching his last tumble was the most nerve-wracking experience ever, it’s hard to explain.

“But when the scores came up and we knew he’d won we were absolutely delighted for Freddie.”

Mr Lomax added: “To see your child win a goal medal for his country is an incredibly feeling.”
