Adam Riley has committed his future to Kent County Cricket Club by signing a new contract extension.

The 23-year-old, who plays for Kent Premier League club Bexley, has taken 143 wickets in 100 first-team appearances since making his debut in 2011.

Riley attracted the attention of England after a fine spell for Kent in the 2014 season and was called up to the Lions squad which toured South Africa last winter.

Opportunities for the Sidcup-born bowler were sparse this summer, with seamer-friendly pitches and the presence of England international James Tredwell ensuring Riley struggled to earn first-team action.

However, the off-spinner showcased his talent with four wickets against the touring Australians and another four scalps in Kent’s fixture against Glamorgan in September.

“I’m really pleased to commit to Kent for the future and to be able to continue my development here,” Riley told News Shopper.

“It’s a big thing playing for your home county.

“They’ve given me a lot of opportunities and supported me by giving me my first contract, and now it’s time to repay that loyalty and sign a new deal.”

After a frustrating season – Riley took 12 first-class wickets this summer compared to a superb 48 the season before – the Bexley star is hoping to reclaim a spot in Kent’s first-team and regain the form which led to a Lions call-up.

He said: “It was a little frustrating, especially after the success I had the year before.

“But I’m determined to get my place back in the team next year.

“In the long-term it might even be a good thing for me to have experienced the highs and lows so early in my career.

“Next season the early games will be in the Championship so that’ll be my first target, and then when 50 over and Twenty20 kick in, I want to be a part of that.

“I’m still at the very beginning of my career as a spinner so I’m not getting too far ahead of myself, I’m just determined to find that form that I was in a couple of years ago and to play a big role for Kent.”

Chairman of Kent CCC, Graham Johnson, added: “It’s great to see another young Kent player commit his future to the club and keep our core of home-grown talent together.

“Adam has all the tools to become an international spinner and we hope the environment at Kent is the perfect place to help him realise that aim.

“2015 was a frustrating year for Adam but it does not diminish, in the slightest, the club’s belief that Adam can reach his full potential.”
