Two members of Erith & District Swimming Club competed in the ASA national summer championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Ruby Verge, 15, who attends Townley Grammar School in Bexley, competed in the 50 and 100m backstroke events.

Verge placed seventh in the 100m with a time right on her personal best, but unfortunately just missed qualification for the 50m final.

Danielle Hills, also 15, who studies at Wilmington Grammar School, raced in the 50m breaststroke.

She blasted her heat swim to gain a new personal best by just under half a second to qualify for the final in seventh place.

However, the effects of hindered training showed in the final, where Hills finished in a respectable ninth place.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Dartford Grammar School pupil James Vick has been selected to represent Kent in next month’s inter-counties competition, which will also be held in Sheffield.

Erith & District SC head coach Michael Cook said: “Ruby, Danielle and James are excellent ambassadors for the club and are exemplary role models for all our younger swimmers.

“Their achievements cannot be understated and act as a platform for the club to develop from.

“There is a great vibe within the club at the moment and I feel success at this level will act as a catalyst to catapult EDSC into new competitive territory.”
