Old Colfeians president John Nunn admitted he had to pinch himself in amazement after walking away with a top prize at the inaugural National Rugby Awards at Twickenham.

England are hosting Fiji at Rugby HQ on September 18, but Nunn got a sneak peak at the famous venue on Wednesday night at the first ever Lawson Keys National Rugby Awards.

With the support of England captain Chris Robshaw, the awards celebrate the great and the good of the sport’s grassroots heroes, acknowledging the dedication and commitment to rugby by thousands of clubs and individuals across the country.

Nunn was there due to his nomination for the Lawson Keys Life Time Award, and after beating five other nominees to the prize he could hardly believe his luck.

“It’s unbelievable really that after having put in a lot of effort for 58 years that I should win this award,” Nunn said.

“Ours is a old school club with an old school that still exists, its 50 per cent girls but we still get a number of people coming through and we hope to build on that.

“And we have a successful minis and juniors producing people for the senior sides, so our prospect and future is looking good

“It’s lovely thing to have an award, and I hope we have a similar thing another year as it has made my day.”

During Nunn’s long time at Old Colfeians this was the first ever National Rugby Awards, and he hopes there are plenty more to come.

“It’s lovely to have a National Rugby Awards as it is nice that smaller clubs get recognised,” he added.

“The rugby clubs like Old Colfeians and all the other rugby clubs that we play against, without volunteers and people putting the effort in there wouldn’t be anybody at the top level.

“And what we do with the minis and the juniors is the future of rugby so to have everyone recognised is great.”
