TENNIS: David Stirk fought off a great comeback from Stephen Wade to win the Farnborough Tennis Club finals day men’s singles crown 6-0, 6-4.

Rose Howell saw off Alice McVeigh 6-1, 6-1 to secure the women’s singles event.

Peter Sargent eventually prevailed over Brian Keegan 10-8 in a champions tie break to land the men’s veterans final.

Sargent and Stirk later teamed up in the men’s doubles finals and defeated Wade and David Howell 6-1, 6-4.

The mixed doubles and ladies doubles finals will be played soon and all the trophies will be presented next month at the club’s American tournament.

GOLF: Golfers of all abilities made their mistakes matter by joining the drive against prostate cancer on Saturday.

Thanks to an exciting new initiative teed up by leading men’s health organisation Prostate Cancer UK, Chipping In invites players to dig deep on August 1, with 1-8 signifying the one in eight men affected by the disease.

Generally, mistakes on course are met by despair, but on Saturday players and their pals got together to do something great by saving lives while messing up.

Special scorecards with allotted fine boxes were available for players to set targets.

The monetary menu of mishaps included lost balls, air-shots, three-putts, triple bogies not to mention shots that go out of bounds or are bunker-bund, with fine amounts set at the start of the round.

Money raised went to Prostate Cancer UK and will aid the fight against a disease that kills one man every hour in the UK.

Prostate Cancer UK’s director of fundraising Mark Bishop said: “Golf is a great fit for us at Prostate Cancer UK.

“From tee to green it offers men that opportunity to talk openly and frankly with their mates outside the shackles of everyday life.

“Sadly this disease is not out of bounds; one man dies every hour from prostate cancer but by chipping in you and your mates can help us fight back.”

RUGBY: Old Colfeians RFC’s minis and juniors section is hoping the upcoming rugby World Cup will boost membership at the Lee club.

Every Sunday morning 230 players aged from six to 18 train or take part hard in matches, all facilitated by dozens of volunteer coaches, referees, managers, first aiders and tea makers.

And those numbers are expected to rise further when the sport takes centre stage when the World Cup gets underway next month.

Old Colfeians chairman Dave Hodgekiss said: “The 2015/16 season is an important one for the club with the boost expected from the World Cup.

“We already commit a lot of time and resource to extending our coaching into state secondary and primary schools.

“While the club retains close ties to Colfes School, it has been an ‘open’ club for many years.

“We are especially proud of the diversity of the club, with players from a wide range of schools and backgrounds.”

Coaching co-ordinator Dave Cheng added: “As rugby is a sport made for all shapes, sizes and abilities, it is great to see how many kids have found team sport for the first time.

“Old Colfeians’ approach has led to the RFU making us a focus club for the RFU World Cup schools programme in south-east London.

“We have created a pathway from playing tag rugby at under six level through to our senior teams and then hopefully into coaching and managing the club, providing a lifetime of sporting activity and friends, in a competitive, safe and fun environment.”
