Greenwich judoka Olivia Piechota insists she will be looking to set the record straight when she competes at next week’s European Youth Olympic Festival.

Piechota headed to the European Cadet Championships in Sofia at the beginning of the month full of confidence after finishing on the podium in all of her events so far this year.

However, history failed to repeat itself as the 17-year-old could only finish seventh in the -44kg after losing to eventual champion Daria Bilodid of Ukraine.

But Piechota doesn’t have to wait long for the chance to get back to winning ways after being called up by Team GB to head to Tbilisi for next week’s European Youth Olympic Festival.

And the Bexley Grammar School pupil is determined to prove that her European Championships adventure is the exception rather than the norm.

She explained: “This season had been going well but I just came back from the European Championships and that wasn’t great at all.

“I went there hoping to get at least a medal, if not gold, but I came seventh and it didn’t go to plan at all.

“I actually hurt my elbow in the fight before as I got caught in an arm lock and that meant I couldn’t fight properly in my next match but she [Daria] still did well and deserved to win.

“It just means that I will be looking to right some wrongs at the European Youth Olympic Festival and I will be going there hoping for medals.

“I want to get myself back to the top like I have been for most of the season and fingers crossed I can do it.”

Piechota’s European Youth Olympic Festival outing will also be her last major international event at cadet level before moving up to the junior ranks.

And the teeneager is looking to go out with a bang.

“This is my last year as a cadet and I am really looking forward to making the step up to the juniors,” she added.

“The European Youth Olympic Festival is a great way to finish and it will be a good indicator of what I can expect next up because a lot of the people who are also moving up will be there too.

“So it will be a good experience and it will be great to finish on a high.”
