Bexleyheath’s Sammy Cantwell is fighting to get the British flyweight title back in the family.

The 27-year-old is looking to extend his unbeaten record to six fights at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on July 18.

He is trained by father Micky, who won the British flyweight title and made four world title challenges in his own ring career.

Jack and Brian London are the only previous father and son to win the British title at the same weight - and Sammy Cantwell’s his target is to emulate them.

He said: “This time next year I should be boxing over ten rounds and then I won’t be far away.

“The dream is to get myself into a position to box for the British flyweight title.

“I’d love to win the same title dad held. I used to shake like a leaf when I watched dad box, and it must be horrendous for him watching me.

“But he has to stay calm because he is in the corner and has to tell me what to do.”

Micky boxed at the York Hall four times in his professional ring career, winning twice.

But next month’s fight will be a first at the famous eastend venue for son Sammy.

He explained: “Knowing I’m boxing at the York Hall has given me a real buzz.

“I never boxed there as an amateur and it has always been an ambition of mine.

“Everyone knows it is the home of British boxing and even if I only fight there once, at least I can say I boxed there.”

Sammy overpowered Andras Kiss last time out inside a couple of rounds but expects a much tougher test on July 18.

He said: "I really need to get some rounds under my belt before I take the next step.

“I need to know I can do the rounds. I need to keep learning and winning at this stage of my career.”
