ATHLETICS: Dartford sprinter Adam Gemili has revealed he hopes to be fully fit by the end of the season after sustaining a leg injury at the Birmingham Grand Prix.

The Blackheath & Bromley Harriers star had just crossed the line of the 100m race in a stunning 9.97s, the 100th man to times less than ten seconds, before going to ground with the leg problem.

It was unclear how serious the problem was but today Gemili told britishathletics.org.uk he plans to be back sooner rather than later.

He explained: “I’m slowly but surely recovering. I’ve got a good bunch of guys working on me.

“I’m not trying to rush things, but if I can get back on the track before the end of the season that is great.

“Of course it would be great if I was able to make Beijing, but I do not know if that will be possible yet and I am not going to risk anything.

“We have to look at the bigger picture, with the Rio Olympics obviously the main priority.”

KORFBALL: Bromley Korfball Club’s U11s team triumphed at England Korfball’s national youth tournament at Club Langley in Beckenham on Sunday.

The event, the largest of its kind in the UK, saw more than 30 teams from around England competing in the U9, U11, U13, U16 and U19 age categories.

Bromley’s U11s saw off competition from teams from London, Kent, Norwich and Cambridge to win the competition.

It completes a quick double after picking up the Kent Cup last month.

Bromley also performed well in the U16s category, finishing fourth.

SAILING: Greenwich is the starting point for this year’s annual Thames barge driving race.

This event, which is running for the 40th time, is one of the greatest Thames spectacles with the seven-mile course ending at Westminster Bridge.

Each barge is manned, like all other great Thames events, under oars by crews of freemen and apprentices of the company of watermen and lightermen.

The barges used can weigh up to 30 tonnes and no more than three crew members can row at any one time, using 20 foot oars to row along the river.

As a further test of the crews’ navigational skills, each barge must collect at least one pennant flag from a moored barge along the course.

GYMNASTICS: Ladywell Gymastics Club member Ella Ross-Jessop overcame injury at the SVOD open invitational international competition in Holland to take gold in the A bars and beam finals.

Ross-Jessop also competed a double-high-leg spin on the beam.

This move was evaluated by an international judge and given the value of an E move, the first time this move has been completed successfully in a competition.

Ladywell’s girls also took the overall gold team trophy in the youth B category, with Isabel Benham winning the silver individual overall medal.

LONDON YOUTH GAMES: Bromley collected three individual gold medals and a silver at the London Youth Games sailing competition.

Matthew Wolstenholme (laser radial),   Callum Sarsfield/Reece Clark (Hansa 303 learning sensory class) and Tre Cameron-Chavannes/Patrick Sarsfield  (Hansa 303 physical disability class) all took golds, while Adam Grimwood (Topper 4.2) claimed silver.

News Shopper:

Despite having the best individual medals haul with 3 golds and a silver, Bromley, who were managed by Luke Hagon, placed fourth overall due mainly to not having enough girls to to enter all the fleets.
