SWIMMING: Lewisham-based Saxon Crown Swimming Club took 31 members of all ages to the Kent county championships held over four weekends and returned home with four golds, seven silvers and nine bronze medals.

As well as a healthy haul of medals, Saxon Crown can now proudly boast having two county champions in Mateusz Szopinski, aged 13, in the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly, and fellow 13-year-old Luke Douglas in the 50m breaststroke.

Saxon Crown took part in 199 individual races throughout the championships, and 72 percent of races resulted in swimmers gaining personal best times.

In the team relay events, the girls’ 15/16 year age group relay squad came away with a bronze against some very strong opposition, as did the boys’ 13/14 age group medley relay squad.

Deputy head coach Lorcan Loughrey said: “This is an exciting time at Saxon Crown.

“We placed third in the arena league earlier this year compared with eighth last year and the club taking its biggest squad to the county championships for a number of years is amazing.

“This is testament to the hard work of all the swimmers, coaches and the support of the parents.

“We are now all looking forward to a successful regional championships in May.”

KICKBOXING: Beckenham’s Michael Wakeling is set to feature in a headline bout at the UK’s  biggest ever showcase of the world’s most action-packed combat sports.

Wakeling, who fights out of the Scorpions gym, has been pitted against 20-year-old sensation Chad Sugden.

The duo will do battle in front an anticipated 10,000-strong crowd on May 23 at Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena for the IKF (International Kickboxing Federation) world title.

The Wakeling name is well-known in the world of combat sports with Michael and his brother Stephen enjoying great success.

Michael was crowned as both world and European Muay Thai champion before achieving many honours in kick-boxing.

He is currently unbeaten for ten years.

And the London-based star is looking forward to continuing that remarkable record in the biggest Muay Thai and Kickboxing event the UK has ever seen.

“I’m really up for this and it is going to be huge,” said Michael, whose fight record reads 29 wins, one loss and a draw.

“Chad is an exciting upcoming prospect but I have been achieving success for a long time and I intend to win and win well on such a massive night for combat sports in the UK.”

FOOTBALL: Goals from Ellie Amodio, Kelsey Barham and Maya Madurai booked Gravesham Girls & Ladies U18s a spot in the final of the Tina Marshall Cup following a 3-0 semi-final success over Monkton.

Despite falling a goal behind to Long Lane, the U15s won 2-1 thanks to late efforts by Freya Askew and Abby Hancock.

The U10s were beaten 1-0 at Castle Colts.

KICKBOXING: Gravesend-based Star Kickboxing Club sent a team of three fighters to compete in Hastings and the trio all triumphed.

Phoebe Cumiskey took on Ireland’s  Alicia Chambers, who had a record of 34 wins and one loss for the five nations ICO belt.

Cumiskey went straight to business, out powering her opponent at every turn until she threw the towel in after the second round.

Serj Fedins was taking part in his very first full contact fight against Nathan Slann.

A hard battle followed for three rounds with Fedins catching Slann with some very big shots, winning the bout unanimously.

Hayley Ward was up against Ireland’s against Lisa Maloney, a tough rival who she had previously defeated at the world unified championships in Italy.

Ward used her superb footwork to avoid the aggressive style of Maloney, picking her shots to perfection and keeping her away.

After five rounds Ward was given a unanimous decision to become five nations ICO champion at her weight. 

JUDO: Crayford Judo Club members have achieved some notable results in national, area and regional events in recent weeks. 

At the British schools championships in Sheffield, Patrick Sykes put in a fine performance to claim gold and become national champion for his age and weight.

Elyas Agounizera, Zak Agounizera and Thomas Deveney 

Club-mate Finley Watson won five fights on his way to claiming bronze.

Finley Harding finished seventh, while Jael Varatharasan and Zak Agounizera all gained valuable experience in their new groups.

Harding took bronze at the Midlands Open, with Sykes, Zak Agounizera, Elyas Agounizera and Jamil Issifu all winning fights.

At a green belt and under area competition, Thomas Deveney performed some superb throws to win all his fights for the gold.

Zak Agounizera put in a very competent performance to win silver, while brother Elyas, was unlucky to finish one place outside the medals.

Continuing the medal run, Joseph Deveney and Arsens Mihailovs won silver and bronze respectively at the Micklefield red and yellow belt competition.
