Orpington’s Lloyd Miller was crowned Queensbury national super middleweight champion on Saturday after dethroning reigning champion Terry Russell in a thrilling contest at the Alexandra Palace.

The 27 year-old produced one of the performances of his life to rip the belt away from the champion on points after five frenetic rounds of boxing.

And after securing the biggest win of his league career, Miller will now attempt to go one better when he challenges the competitions pound for pound ruler Gareth Gardner on May 9 for the coveted British belt.

From the opening bell of the contest, champion Russell looked to impose his will with his aggressive marauding style of fighting as he went in search of the challenger.

But Miller looked calm and composed as he countered with crisp left hands which found their mark on numerous occasions.

As the rounds progressed, the work-rate from both boxers was relentless as both protagonist tried to gain the upper hand.

However, it was Orpington’s Miller who looked to have the edge in proceedings, landing the more eye-catching shots on the counter which bounced off the teak tough champion.

As the contest came to a close, it was Russell who came out firing landing a number of crunching blows that did seem to rattle Miller.

But the champion also had to contend with a vicious looking cut above his right eye sustained at the start of the round, leaving his face covered in a mask of blood.

In the end it was too little too late for the champion as the judges handed Miller to decision by way of a majority verdict, much to the delight of his friends and family who were ringside to witness his triumph.

The newly-crowned champion said: “He was a really tough kid who took everything I threw at him, but I felt throughout the contest I had the edge in class and the verdict showed that.

“It was a hard fight and as I said before the contest he was the champion and he had my full respect.

“After the shots he took I respect him even more.

“I’d just like to say a massive thank you to all my family and friends that came out to support me, and also to my coach Wayne who’s got me to this place in my career.”

Miller’s title-winning exploits will be shown early next month on British Eurosport and his next contest will take place on May 9 at Epsom racecourse.
