LONDON YOUTH GAMES: Bexley youngsters had a week to remember at the London Youth Games with medals in rugby, volleyball and dance.

Bexley’s Year 5/6 tag rugby team from Days Lane Primary, watched on by England Rugby World Cup Winner Maggie Alphonsi, beat St Stephens from Richmond in an exciting final to secure a gold medal at Barn Elms Sports Centre.

Beths Grammar School lost out to defending champions Ernest Bevin from Wandsworth 25-17 in the U15 volleyball schools finals at UEL Sportsdock.

Chislehurst &Sidcup Grammar won a bronze medal in the key stage three category at the first ever London Youth Games dance competition at the Copper Box Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Bexley’s boccia team also qualified for the main boccia competition finals at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre after securing their place with a 2-1 win over Greenwich.

Lewisham will also have the opportunity to defend their title after qualifying for the main boccia finals.

The main team was made up of Year 13 and under pupils from Brent Knoll School looking to retain the title they won last year and topped their group with three wins only losing out to Greenwich 2-0 before securing their spot in the finals with a 2-0 victory over Havering.

In the mini competition, Lewisham went unbeaten throughout the competition securing a tight 3-2 victory over Enfield to join the main team at Crystal Palace later this month.

FOOTBALL: Gravesham Girls U14s twice came from behind to retain the Kent Girls county cup with a 4-2 win over Real Gima U14s thanks to Jade Fawcett, Holly Martin and Freja Askew (2).

The U18 moved into a clear second after Daisy Wickenden’s free-kick sealed a 1-0 win over Folkestone.

This was bettered in the second game of a double header which Gravesham won 4-0 courtesy of Wickenden, Maya Madurai and Megan King (2).

An Olivia Haynes penalty secured a 1-1 draw for the U10s against West Kent Girls.

BOXING: Sidcup fighter Jimmy Roe overcame current southern counties champion Ryan Oliver (Leigh Park) in the national ABA junior quarter-finals U66kgs event on Saturday.

Roe got the verdict in a second round TKO and will now face in the semi-final on Saturday.

If he is successful at the Sheffield bout he will then progress through to Sunday’s final.

Fisher ABC club-mate Dominic Joyce  who also won on Saturday and is looking to win his first National Title at the U52kgs weight.

MUAY THAI: A young member of Semtex Gym is set to amongst the best in her age and weight category at the Sandee finals.

Bethany Collins, 11, started training at Semtex Gym at the age of seven.

Less than two years later she won her first title in just eight seconds, later earning the name 'Evil One’ as this was not the only fight to be won in under 15 seconds.

Collins has since taken another seven titles with the hope of adding more this year.

Her next fight will be on March 28 in Stoke where she will complete amongst the best in her age and weight category at the Sandee finals.

This year Collins hopes to qualify for the national team and represent her country at the world championships.

RUGBY: Teenagers across Lewisham are being invited to apply for scholarships with a brand new sixth form rugby academy based at Harris City Academy, Crystal Palace.

The academy opens this summer for students joining Year 12 and will offer a professional experience for student athletes through a partnership with London Irish RFC and the RFU.  

Students who apply to the Harris Sixth Form’s Crystal Palace site and are successful at the Rugby Academy’s trials will be offered a full scholarship.

The scholarship includes elite coaching from London Irish RFC, regular matches at a senior stadium, professional playing analysis and tracking,a full match kit, training kit and presentation kit, physio care and team transport on game days.

Rugby Academy scholars will also have access to London Irish match tickets, stadium tours and employment and training opportunities.
