Sidcup snooker player Phil O’Kane is hoping his recent Kent amateur championship success will provide the springboard for another crack at the big time.

The 22-year-old former Hurstmere School pupil has already played the likes of Judd Trump, John Higgins, Mark Allen, Ali Carter and Ken Doherty in big events around the world.

However, a lack of sponsorship saw those plans put on hold, something O’Kane is determined to put right after title success in the county championships at Margate.

O’Kane saw off competition from 63 rivals to emerge as 3-0 victor over Darren Mirza in the final, with the Sidcup potter also claiming the highest break prize for an 81 effort in his semi-final triumph.

Next up for the young hopeful is a tournament in Gloucester where O’Kane will be looking to build on his recent win.

He said: “I've been about snooker for years and am still looking for my big break, so am really trying to push for sponsorship to enter all the events which is what I've struggled to do in the past.”
