FENCING: Gravesham Fencing Coach Peter Barwell has been chosen to fence for England at this week’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The sport is not part the main Commonwealth Games but organised as a separate event.

Barwell, 23, is ranked number six in England and has been a coach at Gravesham FC for the last three years having first picked up a sword at the age of eight.

He has been training up to six times a week to ensure he has the chance of gold and his aim is to continue his success after Glasgow by securing selection for the Rio Olympics.

FOOTBALL: Gravesham Girls & Ladies FC saw three of their teams playing in their respective quarter finals of the Kent Girls & Ladies League Cup this weekend.

The U12s faced tough opposition in their clash with Ex-Blues FC and despite a sterling effort and a cracking goal from Hannah Spooner, they lost 7-1.

Jade Fawcett (3), Holly Martin (2), Freja Askew (2), Abby Hancock and Imogen Saunders secured a place in the semi-finals for the U15’s with a 9-2 away victory over Anchorian Angels.

However, the U16s’ clash with Thanet Colts proved to be a real nail-biter.

Despite going 2-0 in the first half, they fought back to equalise with a goal apiece form Ami Burnham and Roisin Fuller.

Extra-time saw the scoreline remain at 2-2 before Gravesham won on penalties taken by Megan Taylor, Becky Burnham, Fuller and Gaby Hutchinson.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder (middle above) spent just over a year with Gillingham in two spells, with a short stint at Millwall Lionesses sandwiched in between.

And the new recruit spent little time outlining her ambitions for the season with Charlton, saying: “I want us to win the league.

“I didn’t expect an opportunity like this. I’m going to grab it with both hands and go for it.

“I can’t wait to walk out there with a Charlton shirt on and feel proud of the team that I’m on.”
