KARATE: Sydenham’s Nicole Arnold enjoyed a third-place finish at the recent British Open in Crawley.

The Sydenham Girl’s School sixth form student was competing in her first karate knockdown tournament having fought and represented England as a junior.

However, the step up to full contact, especially at the British Open competition at the K2 Sports Centre in the largest domestic tournament of 2014, was a big one.

Arnold was fighting in the lightweight female cadet category and had a number of tough fights against rivals from England and Ireland before facing a girl from Wales knowing victory would secure a podium finish.

The Crystal Palace Karate Club member attacked with a Mae-Geri Chudan, a fast kick to the stomach judged by the referees as a Wazari as it stopped the opponent, halting the fight and awarding victory and third place overall to Arnold.

OCs’ scores came from an Adam Hodgkiss try together with a conversion and penalty from Ed Livett.

SQUASH: Bromley duo Billy Jones and Ted Jeal became the British doubles racquet ball champions at Chapel A Squash Club in Leeds on October 11.
