Anerley’s Susan Cook has set her sights on the Rio 2016 Paralympics  after clinching two silver medals at the first ever Invictus Games in London.

The 26-year-old was chosen to represent Great Britain in Thursday’s track and field competition at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre.

And she put in an impressive performance to finish in second place in both the 100m and 400m wheelchair IT4 finals.

And with the Rio less than two years away, Cook intends to keep dropping her times this winter in order to get closer to selection for Great Britain.

“I'm ecstatic with my performance – I haven't raced on the track since April and I've knocked two seconds off my PB, so I couldn’t be any happier,” she said.

“It's been amazing to be part of the Invictus Games, the whole experience has been incredible.

“At the opening ceremony I was sat right behind Prince Harry, just by the podium and I just cried almost the entire time - including coming round that track.

“I've got the winter now to train up and I want to come back next year fighting.

“I reckon I'm about fifth in GB women for my category and I've now got winter to make it to the top three.

“I want to go to Rio in 2016 and I want to become GB's golden girl.”

The Invictus Games are an international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick service personnel, with more than 400 competitors from 13 nations taking part in nine sports across four days in London.

Cook’s military career came to an end when she injured the bottom of her foot in 2009 while in the Army Air Corps.

The injury irritated all the nerves which then caused a nerve disorder and Cook admits sport had played a vital part in her recovery.

“When I was discharged I was told all I could do was claim benefits, get a good GP and get the best treatment I could because there was nothing left to try,” she added.

“Then a year ago I became part of Frontline to Startline and Help for Heroes and I found sport.

“I've just gone from strength to strength from there.

“My legs and body have got worse but every single day I've got sport - that keeps me going and gets my head focused rather than thinking about how much pain I'm in.

“Sport has been a real lifesaver.”
