An Orpington-based tennis academy has won the Aegon team tennis national title for the first time.
A1 Pharmaceuticals defeated number one seeds Mackintosh 4-2 in the semi-finals to book a final spot against last year’s winners Sutton Tennis & Squash Club.
The Orpington team started strongly with Toby Martin earning a 6-4 6-4 win over Sutton’s Cameron Norrie.
However, Jack Carpenter responded for Sutton with a straight sets win.
The pattern continued at number one and two singles, leaving the match level at 2-2 after singles.
Sutton edged to within one rubber of the title with a win at number two doubles.
In one of the matches of the tournament, A1 came through a captivating number one doubles rubber as Matthew Short and Marcus Willis (A1) defeated Josh Goodall and Jathan Malik (Sutton) 6-7 7-6 10-7.
For the second year running the men’s final was to be decided by shootout and on this occasion it was Orpington’s finest who came out triumphant as Short and Toby Martin earned singles wins in the shootout to claim the national open title.
