TENNIS: Knoll Lawn Tennis Club’s Anne Williams has been named Kent player of the year for 2013.

Williams has topped the European rankings in her age category and was recognised by Tennis Europe during the course of this year’s Wimbledon, receiving her award from the Duchess of Gloucester.

She was presented with the county honour at Saturday’s Knoll TC club finals day, where she has provided lengthy service as treasurer, fixtures secretary and junior organiser.

Williams received a certificate from the International Tennis Federation naming her as world number one for mixed doubles in her age category.

As lasting recognition of this achievement, Orpington-based KLTC has named one its new trophies the Anne Williams Plate.

BOXING: Gravesham ABC’s Cheavon Clarke has been selected to represent Jamaica at this month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, fellow club member Hayley Ward is set to represent England in the 51kg youths category at the European women’s youth and junior championships in Italy.

FOOTGOLF: Eighty footgolfers competed in the inaugural footgolf tournament at Orpington Golf Centre on Sunday.

The objective of footgolf is to compete a round in as few kicks and strokes as possible.

Footgolfers use a variety of precision shots to kick a football from tee to cup.

Nick Iron lived up to his billing as the UK's leading player by posting a new course record of 56 to claim victory and a £125 first prize

The next tournaments here will be held on August 16 and September 13.

PETANQUE: The Kent Petanque Association’s annual mixed doubles title is up for grabs in Istead Rise on Sunday.

More than 26 teams will fight it out to win the crown at Istead Rise Community Centre on Worcester Close.

Istead Rise club president Brian King said: “We are really looking forward to hosting this competition with many of the entrants from the Gravesham area. 

“It would be good for a local pair to win.”

KWIK CRICKET: Pupils from Hurst Primary School finished runners up in the mixed Years 5 and 6 Kent county kwik cricket tournament.

Placings for other schools from the News Shopper region were: fourth - Wentworth (Dartford), fifth – Cobham (Gravesham), seventh – Pickhurst (Bromley) and 16th Eltham (Greenwich).

In the girls’ competition Halstow (Greenwich) were third, Hayes (Bromley) eighth and Danson (Bexley) 11th overall.

CRICKET: Bromley District U12s and U14s each suffered defeat at the hands of their respective Medway counterparts in the county finals at Ashford.

The U12s (100 all out) went down by three wickets, while the U14s (86 all out) were beaten by eight wickets.

DIVING: Crystal Palace Diving Club finished overall champions at the ASA national age group competition in Sheffield, the seventh championship the club have won on the trot.

Among the many highlights was the display of 13-year-old Florence Smith, who won a trio of golds in the platform (personal best of 204.70), one metre board (pb 230.65) and three metre board (pb 249.50).

Younger sister Evie, aged nine, competed against rivals two hyears older than her but this didn’t stop her collecting silver in the one metre board event.

Crystal Palace DC secured gold in 10 events, including five clean sweeps.

Gold: Tyler Humphreys, Lexie Howard, Ciara McGing, Louise Bradley, Marisa Conner, Tia Monk.

Silver: Humphreys, Pele Julien, McGing, Bradley, Howard, Monk, Isobel Ruff.

SWIMMING: Orpington Ojays' and Sharks swimmer Billy Birchmore has been nominated for disability swimmer of the year.

He spent last weekend at Reading competing at the May Philips national championships where he won the 100m fly and 100m free, also gaining two silvers in the 50m free and 50m fly.
