SIDCUP’S Jamie Andrews missed out on claiming the vacant Queensbury Boxing League novice middleweight title for a second time after suffering a second points defeat in the competition.

Returning to the ring after losing out to previous champion Tom Dolan at the end of last season, Andrews was up against fellow challenger Ben Davies.

Andrews accepted the fight at three weeks notice due to Dolan withdrawing from the clash with Davies after breaking his hand in the build up to the contest.

But although possessing a sizable height and reach advantage in the fight, Andrews could not hold off the aggressive Redhill man, going down to his second unanimous points defeat during his league career.

From the opening bell it was clear all the physical advantages lay with the Sidcup plumber as he towered above his rival.

But even height and reach could not keep the marauding Davies at bay, as he powered past Andrews’ long levers to unload his trademark clubbing blows.

Andrews seemed tentative throughout all four rounds as he failed to impose his shots on Davies, making it far too easy for his opponent to close the distance down and land his shots.

As the contest played out, Andrews just couldn’t seem to get started and was second to the punch throughout the bout.

When the final bell rang out a dejected looking Andrews looked resigned to his fate.

And the Sidcup man’s fears were confirmed by master of ceremonies John Atkins, with Davies declared the winner and new Queensbury novice middleweight champion.

Andrews said: “I’d like to thank everyone that came down to support me but I didn’t stick to the game plan and looking back at the footage I’d say it was my worst performance so far.

“I looked flat-footed, wasn’t using my jab and I did not throw enough punches, but the better man won on the night so I can’t take anything away from Davies.

“I think now I’m going to take some time out to spend with my family, work on my boxing and see where I go from there.

“But I’d like to say a big thank you to all of my team at Like2Box and Jumbo Boxing group for getting me ready.”
