BEXLEY girls have made it through to next month’s finals of the London Youth Games volleyball tournament.

Bronze medallists last year, the borough looked in great form as they topped their qualifying group with four wins out of four, including a close 26-24 battle against Hackney.

In the quarter-final Bexley faced Brent, and it was the north Londoners who got the first points on the board.

The two teams looked evenly match but as the game progressed it was Bexley who came out on top, winning 25-18.

The Bexley girls will now join teams from Waltham Forest, Richmond and defending champions Wandsworth at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre for the finals which take place on July 6.

Team manager Jody Specht said: “We were third last year, so we are hoping to win this year.

“Wandsworth are very strong, so we will probably be very similar to them, we will have to see how it goes.”

Meanwhile, there was a strong family connection which helped Bexley win silver in the angling competition.

Team manager Alan McGuirk oversaw a team which consisted of sons George, 14, and Harry, 11, as well as 16-year-old Hurstmere Foundation School pupil James Matthews.

He joked: “It’s not nepotism, they are there on merit.

“You can see how well they done today and we’ve come in the top three or four for the last few years.

“They try hard, they are all good lads.

“It’s good to do well here, it’s a good little stepping stone.

“One of the team went on to England trials off the back of doing well last year.

“He didn’t quite make it to England but got in the southern team, so we were pleased with that.”
