BECKENHAM Bears RLFC opened their London Entrance League account on Saturday with an impressive away draw at the Newham Dockers.

First half tries from Paul Hyde and hooker Chris Beaven were matched by the Dockers, as the teams went in to the dressing room at 10-10.

However, the Bears found another gear early in the second half.

Beaven set up left wing Aaron Brown before he nipped through himself on 47 minutes to plunder his second try.

With stand-off Billy Osborne adding the extras, the Bears led 22-10.

Newham scored another try but full-back Lewis Thorneycroft looked to have killed off the game on 57 minutes and the conversion gave Beckenham a 14-point lead.

But a hailstorm on 60 minutes changed the complexion of the game and Newham scored three unanswered tries, though profligacy with the boot saw them only draw level on 28-28.

This set up a tense last few minutes in which both teams had chances to score but failed to do so as the honours were shared.

Beckenham Bears open their home season on Saturday at Goals Beckenham North in Copers Cope Road against the Greenwich Admirals.
