A BICKLEY boxer has progressed through to the next stage of a national amateur competition after becoming the London champion last weekend.

Charlie Wynn, 23, who is a member of Keddles ABA in St Mary’s Cray, defeated fellow welterweight Chris Kennelly (Five Star Gym, Essex) in the semi-final on Saturday to book a final spot 24 hours later at Grove Park TA Centre with David Richardson (Ruislip Gym).

And it was the former Ravens Wood pupil who emerged as the unanimous winner, a result which delighted Wynn after a tentative start against Kennelly.

He told News Shopper: “In the semi on the Saturday I was a bit slow out of the traps in the opening round.

“But I managed to pull it back in the second and third rounds to reach the final on the Sunday.

“I was determined I would start well in the final because in amateur boxing it is all about the point scoring and you need to be on it from the first bell.

“It all went well and I got a unanimous verdict.”

Wynn will now represent London at the pre-quarters, which take place at Feltham on November 3.

If he succeeds there he will go through to the quarter-finals and move one step closer to making the final in Newcastle on December 9.
