Ten man Welling United came within seconds of claiming three hard earned points at third placed Hampton and Richmond Borough.

In the final minute of the five additional ones at the end of the game Brendan Kiernan's shot from twenty five yards took a deflection to take it beyond Bailey Vose and into the top corner..

Jamie Coyle's unchanged Welling team started strongly but might have gone behind in the eighth minute when Shaun Jeffers flashed a shot across the face of goal.

However, Welling continued to look the livelier and missed a great chance to go ahead. Jamie Philpot's quick feet allowed him to find space to send Adam Coombes away. As he burst into the box and shaped to shoot Charlie Wassmer came across and bundled him to the ground.

After an eternity while the referee booked Wassmer and had a long conversation with Ben Wynter, Bradley Goldberg stepped up to blast the spot kick straight at Seny Dieng. Jack Jebb was first to the rebound and crossed for Goldberg to stab home but as Welling celebrated the linesman raised the flag for an offside that was not obvious to the naked eye.

Max Kretzschmar headed wide from a Brendan Kiernan cross as the hosts threatened on another quick break.

Kiernan had a shot locked for a corner before a Kretzschmar free kick was saved comfortably by Vose.

Another Hampton break allowed Jeffers a shot that was deflected wide before a petulant act by Jack Jebb earned him a yellow card.

Welling continued to play the more expansive football and created a couple of chances. First Callum Driver clipped over the back four to allow Joe Healy to get in behind but he was unable to direct his header beyond Dieng.

Then a half cleared corner came out as far as Driver but his first time shot flew over.

Jebb sent in a free kick that flew off Christian Jolley's head and could have gone anywhere but fortunately for him it flew just wide of his own goal. Then another Jebb delivery evaded everyone in the penalty area and floated just past the far post.

Immediately after the break, Hampton had a good chance when Jeffers got in behind but Vose made himself big and kept his shot out with an outstretched leg.

Jeffers then tried his luck with an overhead effort that landed on the roof of the net.

Injuries meant that both Archie Johnson and Healy were forced to limp off with Ben Jefford and Connor Dymond replacing them for Welling but that did not put Welling off and they went ahead on the hour mark. Another excellent Jebb free kick found Philpot in the area and his powerful header gave Dieng no chance.

Kretzschmar shot over after a corner was half cleared before a great Welling break almost brought them a second goal. Goldberg sent Philpot away down the right wing and burst into the area to meet his cross with a bullet header that went just over.

It got that much harder for Welling soon after when Jebb's challenge on Bradley Hudson-Odoi was deemed to be a foul and to make matters worse, an offence worthy of a second yellow card.

Hampton did get the ball into the net but there was a hand-ball in the build up and it was disallowed.

As the game moved into the latter stages, Vose made an excellent save from Hudson-Odoi's low drive.

Referee Jacob Miles then went into over-drive by showing yellow cards to all and sundry as the game moved into injury time.

Just as it looked as though Welling were going to leave with an impressive victory, Kiernan scored the gut-wrenching equaliser.

Miles blew his final whistle within twenty seconds of the re-start but the drama didn't end there. Jack Parkinson voiced his feelings to the referee to such an extent that he was shown a straight red card.
