Victory at Gloucester City moved Welling United into fifth place in the league just two points from the top.

In fairness, the hosts adapted to the difficulties caused by Storm Brian far better than Welling but the visitors defended well and claimed all three points with a late goal.

Injury to goalkeeper Kleton Perntreou meant that Dillon Barnes was recalled to the team and he was solid throughout.

Early on, he watched a long punt from Keiran Thomas float over the bar and on to the roof of the net. Christian Nanetti also retuned following a one week absence.

As Welling struggled in the face of the fierce wind, Edward Williams came inside and found Karnell Chambers but his shot lacked conviction and was saved easily by Barnes.

It was pretty much one way traffic in the first half as Welling struggled against the fierce wind but their defence remained firm and reduced the hosts to long range shots.

Charlie Ten-Grotenhuis, on his debut, fired well over from 35 yards then Tom Webb did likewise.

Edward Williams came closer when shooting wide from twenty yards before Sam Avery might have done better when heading over from close range after a corner was not cleared.

Jack Storer was on target from long range but despite it swirling in the wind, Barnes was vigilant and beat it out.

Kieran Paeselle had a shot tipped over and two further efforts from Storer failed to concern Barnes as they sailed well over his head.

At the break, Jack Richards was introduced for his Welling debut on loan from Maidstone United when he replaced Nanetti.

Joe Healy tried his luck with a curler that Tom Hadler did well to tip over then Jack Jebb created a chance for Eli Phipps that was also saved.

Despite suggestions that Welling were going to take control of the second period, Gloucester enjoyed more of the possession but failed to break down the well drilled Welling defence.

Chambers headed wide from Williams' cross then Parselle fired well wide as chances became fewer and farther between.

Substitute Bradley Goldberg shot over from twenty yards and it looked as though the game was meandering towards a goalless draw until Welling snatched the points with six minutes remaining.

Richards chipped it in from the right, Tom Bradbrook flicked it on and Healy lifted it over Hadler and into the net.

That was sufficient to extend Welling's run to six consecutive wins..

Welling United: Barnes, Dymond, Jefford, Durojaiye, Gayle, Parkinson, Monakana, Healy, Phipps (Bradbrook 60), Jebb (Goldberg 71), Nanetti (Richards 46). Subs not used: Coyle, Francis.
