At the fifth time of asking, Welling United claimed their first league win of the season but made it difficult for themselves.

Having cruised into a three goal lead they took their foot off the pedal and had to defend well to claim the three points that they deserved.

Three new signings went straight into the Welling squad with Jack Jebb and Jeffrey Monakana in the starting line up.

In the first minute, Welling could have gone behind. Stefan Brown skipped his way past the Welling defence but scuffed his shot with just Dillon Barnes to beat.

James Clarke then fired wide for Hungerford but it was the Wings who went ahead.

Jebb, whose dead ball deliveries were dangerous throughout, sent over a free kick that player-manager Jamie Coyle met with a towering header beyond Lewis Ward for his fourth goal in five matches.

Warren Bentley crossed but Brown headed wide before Barnes claimed an over-hit through ball from Callum Willmoth.

Fifteen minutes in and Welling made it two. Bradley Goldberg collected a long ball and somehow forced himself through challenges to give himself shooting space. He then let fly from 25 yards beating Ward at his bottom corner.

Again Jebb caused havoc from a dead ball situation when Ian Gayle met his header with a clean header that hit a defender causing a big shout for handball but referee Lee Brennan waved the appeals away.

However, Jebb's next corner had a better result when Tom Bradbrook headed home with under twenty minutes on the clock.

Ten minutes later, Hungerford reduced the arrears. Barnes made a great save from Brown's header but Louie Soares was first to react giving the Welling custodian no chance.

Monakana then went on a long thrilling run and he left two defenders in his wake but Ward was out just quickly enough to stop the Sutton United loanee from finishing.

Gayle headed wide from another Jebb corner before an injury to Bradbrook saw him depart early with Lloyd Macklin coming on for his Welling debut having signed from Metropolitan Police.

Brown fired in a shot from the corner of the area that Barnes tipped over before Welling again came close. Gayle played a through ball that Goldberg flicked on to send Macklin away but the substitute's fierce drive flew the wrong side of the near post.

Once more a Jebb free kick caused mayhem but it hit Gayle and went wide when it could easily have flown into the net.

James Clarke headed wide from a cross by Soares and Bentley had a low shot saved by Barnes before the two teams went in for the break.

Soares tried his luck shortly after the interval but his effort from the edge of the area curled wide before Welling had another great opportunity.

Joe Healy found Jebb and his deft flick sent Goldberg through but Ward was again out quickly to make the save.

Rhys Tyler fired over for the visitors as the game became more bitty, partly due to stoppages for substitutions.

Barnes had to be alert again when claiming a Bentley free kick that was too long for his team mates who'd lined up hoping to get on the end of it.

Macklin then pressurised Ward into picking up a back pass and after appearing to be confused, the referee awarded a free kick on the bye-line. Jebb drove it across the face of goal but it avoided any touch that would have knocked it in.

Luke Hopper chested down and spun but shot wide for Hungerford then Ward again saved from Goldberg after Healy and Jebb had again combined.

Bentley had a shot deflected wide in the closing minutes and then crossed for Hooper to head off target before Hungerford claimed a lifeline in the final minute when Hooper scored from Willmoth's cross.

Deep into injury time, Macklin broke away and cut in before curling just beyond the far post but the visitors did not threaten again and Welling were soon celebrating their victory.

News came through afterwards that Hungerford manager Bobby Wilkinson had resigned from the club and that assistant manager Jamie Leacock and head coach Mike Percival had also left.
