After a tightly contested first half, Welling United ran out comfortable winners against Oxford City.

Their four-nil victory took them up to sixteenth, the highest they've been all season, and they also recorded their first home clean sheet of the campaign.

Pierre-Joseph-Dubois' flicked header from Matt Fish's cross brought an early save out of Craig Hill.

However Oxford then enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and Lee Henderson headed over unopposed from a free kick.

Michael Fondop touched on a Freddie Grant free kick but Chris Lewington made the save.

Tom Winters was then sent clear by a Fondop flick but Sam Hatton got back to make a great last ditch tackle as Lewington advanced.

Freddie Grant became the first of five Oxford players to be cautioned when fouling Joseph-Dubois and their lack of discipline was more evident when they crowded the referee demanding a penalty despite Matt Fish having timed his tackle perfectly.

Adam Coombes had a header cleared off the line from Sam Hatton's free kick before he thought he had put the Wings ahead from a free kick. Somehow, Hill got across to make a sensational save.

Henderson again showed his danger from dead ball situations when meeting a free kick but his header flew wide.

Reece Fleet then fired just over from 25 yards after Welling had only half cleared before the hosts missed another good chance.

Rickie Hayles met Danny Waldren's free kick and headed on to Harry Crawford but his header flew over and an eventful first half finished goal-less.

Shortly into the second period, Coombes headed wide at the near post from Hatton's corner then a low Fish shot brought an easy save out of Hill.

Eventually, the deadlock was broken when Coombes' cross was knocked out as far as Joseph-Dubois and he fired home low from fifteen yards.

Four minutes later, Welling made it two with an outstanding goal when Waldren controlled a high cross and spun to volley into the top corner.

That allowed Welling to take a precautionary measure and replace Sean Francis with Ali Fuseini.

Christian Nanetti and Crawford combined to create another chance for Coombes but Hill was again equal to it.

Nanetti and Crawford combined again when the former split the Oxford defence for Crawford to fire home for Welling's third.

Three minutes later, Coombes made it four with another tremendous free kick that even Hill couldn't keep out.

Jamie Slabber then came on for Coombes, returning after a long lay off and twice came close in the last five minutes.

First he volleyed wide when Oxford's defence failed to deal with Dan Walker's cross. Then he headed wide of the near post from another Walker delivery.

It mattered little as Welling claimed the points to give them a five point buffer from the relegation zone.
