New head coach, Jamie Day, celebrated his first game back at Welling United with a victory at Wealdstone.

Returning from injury, Pierre Joseph-Dubois came in for Ali Fuseini and Dean Leacock replaced Rickie Hayles as Welling made two changes from the team that lost to Whitehawk seven days earlier.

Former Wing Ricky Wellard fired high and wide for the Stones before Welling took command.

Sam Hatton slung in a free kick that Leacock flicked on but Jonathan North was quick to come out and punch away off the head of Sean Francis. It came out to Lyle Della-Verde but he blasted well over.

More strong Welling pressure gave Christian Nanetti the chance to shoot but his low drive was well saved by North.

Adam Coombes then held up play well before laying into the path of Danny Waldren but North got down well to push his shot past the post.

Warning signals sounded for Welling when Wealdstone had a three on two break but Ciaron Brown was forced out wide and delivered a poor ball that Chris Lewington was able to claim with Elliot Benyon in acres of space.

Still Welling continued to look like the team in the top half of the table and Coombes was brought down on the edge of the box. Della-Verde took the free kick but North made a relativeky comfortable save.

Della-Verde drew another save out of North after trickery on the edge of the area allowed him the opportunity as Welling continued to dominate.

He then turned provider when pulling back for Nanetti but Edward Oshodi threw himself into a brave block from the first effort before North made a comfortable save from Nanetti's follow up.

After Della-Verde hit an optimistic effort well wide from twenty five yards, Welling had two great chances to break the dead lock.

First Leacock rose to meet a Della-Verde corner with a firm header that flashed wide of the far post.

Then Della-Verde and Nanetti combined to send Coombes away but North made a great block to deny the Wings' leading scorer.

Matt Fish had a low drive saved then Craig Braham-Barrett blasted over as Welling were unable to make their first half superiority pay.

At the interval, Welling were forced into making a change with Hayles replacing Francis after an earlier clash with Sahr Kabba..

Both teams struggled to find any cohesion after the break and chances were at a premium.

Coombes blasted a free kick well over after a foul that earned Josh McLeod-Uuquhart a caution. David Hunt was also booked for showing dissent.

Danny Green came close to putting the hosts ahead after Oshodi pulled back a long cross field ball but his shot went just the wrong side of the post with Lewington a spectator as Welling's midfield was forced to dig in.

Green then came even closer after a contentious decision with a free kick that clipped the bar on the way over.

Having not created much in the second half, Welling grabbed what turned out to be the winner in the 90th minute. Substitute Archie Johnson put in a teasing cross that Elliot Godfrey, under pressure from Waldren, could only nod inside the post for an own goal.

That proved to be the last meaningful moment of the match as Welling saw out the additional four minutes without alarm.
