Tom Bonner admits he felt devastated after Ebbsfleet failed to turn their dominance into a win at Chelmsford City on Saturday.

Fleet, who have emerged as early pace setters in the National League South after a stunning start to the season, created several openings but failed to find the breakthrough.

And Bonner, 27, believes that on another day Ebbsfleet could have recorded a comprehensive win over City.

“I thought we played really well, it was one of the most dominant performances of the season but we just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net,” he said.

“That’s obviously very disappointing – they defended really well and their goalkeeper had a great game, but we’ve had three or four top chances and on another day it could have been quite comfortable.

“Daryl [McMahon] was obviously disappointed but he told us that it was a strong performance.”

The visitors, who remain nine points clear of their nearest rival in the league, left Essex feeling aggrieved after they were controversially denied a goal by the offside flag.

The defender said: “From where I was it seemed like a square ball to Matt Godden. I’ve watched it back and I think it was a bad decision from the linesman.

“But it seemed like one of those days really where a few things went against us.

“To dominate the game like we did and create so many chances, but to only come away with a point was devastating really, but we’ll move on and take the positives from the game.”

Ebbsfleet have won 11 of their 14 league matches this term and have scored 24 goals in the process.

But former Dartford and Cambridge defender Bonner insists he hasn’t been surprised by this fantastic start.

“I knew before the season what this squad was capable of and was expecting a good season,” he added.

“I’m also confident that we can keep this run going.

“It’s a great squad and a great club to be at – there’s a lot of talent in the dressing room and everyone’s enjoying it right now.”

The Fleet entertain relegation-strugglers Wealdstone on Saturday.
