FORMER Charlton keeper Bob Bolder presented winning medals to youngsters from St Margaret Clitherow after they won the 14th annual Matthew Clarke memorial tournament.
The popular event for primary schools in Thamesmead this year attracted 15 entries for a busy afternoon of football hosted by Sporting Club Thamesmead at Crossway Park.
And it was St Margaret Clitherow who emerged victorious in the final with a 1-0 success over Boxgrove.
Bolder, who was attending as a representative of the Charlton Athletic Community Trust jointly presented the winning medals with the mother of Matthew Clarke, Marcy.
He said: “This is the second time I have been involved in the Matthew Clarke football tournament.
“It is a great community event held at a fantastic community facility and it is good to see so many young people playing football in such good spirit.”
Northwood school’s goalie 10-year-old keeper Omonefe Orogun said: “It was brilliant playing so many games and meeting Bob Bolder, he is an inspiration to me as a goalie.”
Sporting Club Thamesmead’s sports development officer Dan Wells said: “The annual tournament really does justice in keeping the memory of former St John Fisher pupil and Thamesmead Town FC U10s team member Matthew Clarke alive.
“We would like to thank Matthew’s mum, Marcy, who supports the event every year, as well as the schools for participating.
“Without them there wouldn’t be a contest.”
