DARTFORD assistant boss Paul Sawyer is refusing to attach any significance to his side having home advantage in the second leg of their play-off double header with Basingstoke on Sunday.

The Darts travel to Hampshire for the first game tomorrow evening where they will be looking to build a useful lead going into the Sunday meeting at Princes Park.

A home tie was guaranteed on account of Dartford finishing second in the Conference South, something they will also have in the final against either Welling or Sutton United should they make it.

But despite a huge crowd guaranteed for Sunday’s match, Sawyer believes it will not play too heavily on his side’s mind going into either leg.

He explained: “I don’t know if it is an advantage or not.

“We’ve played as well on our travels as at home this season and are always well supported on the road and at Princes Park.

“It wouldn’t worry me either way to be honest, all that matters is making sure we get the right result and come out on top over the two games.

“We’ve had a very good season and we want to take the form which got us up to second in the league into the play-offs.

“It is going to be about who performs best on the day because all four teams in the play-offs have had good seasons and will fancy their chances.”

Sawyer added: “It would be a marvellous achievement to win promotion to the Conference.

“Our aim at the start of the season was to compete to get into the play-offs, which we’ve managed to do.

“Now it is all down to these games.”

And despite Dartford finishing 17 points above Basingstoke, and beating them 4-1 at Princes Park in their last meeting on February 27, Sawyer knows it counts for nothing going into the annual end of season nerve shredders.

He said: “They beat us 3-2 earlier on in the season, which was our first defeat, but both sides have had changes since then.

“We did beat them 4-1 and we obviously know quite a bit about each other, but Basingstoke have hit a bit of form since then to take them into the final play-off spot.

“Does it matter we finished 17 points ahead of them?

“It doesn’t mean a thing. This is a totally new competition and we all arrive in the same position.”
