WELLING United held their annual player of the year awards night after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Basingstoke.

The Wings, who are set to face Sutton United in a play-off double header this week, hosted the awards ceremony in the club bar, where Loui Fazakerley won the fans’ player of the year honour.

Striker Loick Pires enjoyed a double success, claiming the players’ player of the year and goal of the season for his perfectly timed stunning last minute winner against Salisbury on November 15, a game which Welling just edged 4-3.

Anthony Acheampong won the players’ most improved player award and an honourable mention was given to skipper Jack Parkinson who finished runner-up in the player of the season vote.

A special award was also given to Eric Brackstone for all his hard work with advertising in the ground and programme.

Manager Jamie Day thanked the fans on behalf of the staff and players for their support throughout the season, as well as coach Stacey Beckham.

Welling United Supporters Association chairman Matt Mein said: “I would just like to thank everyone who attended the end of season presentation.

“It was a great success and it was good to see so many Wings supporters.

“More importantly it is not the end season, let’s finish off the job and take this opportunity to take us back to the Conference for the first time in 12 years.

“It is up to us the supporters to lift the players in the final games and give it everything we've got.”
