WELLING United manager Jamie Day was a happy man after witnessing his side grab three second-half goals against Havant & Waterlooville on Tuesday evening.

The Wings hadn't played a game for over three weeks since the 1-1 draw against Chelmsford City at the end of January, and they were punished after just two minutes on the clock after poor marking.

"We conceded to a sloppy free-kick after just two minutes, we didn't mark, and at the end of the first half, we got what we deserved," said Day.

"We didn't deserve to be in the lead or on level terms, but in the second half we've had a go in the first 20 minutes, got back into it and showed what we can do.

"I didn't think the 4-3-3 formation worked for us in the first-half, so we went to 4-4-2 in the second half and had two wide players that have got pace and are direct.

"Yes, they did have 10 men but we still had to break them down and score the goals, which we did.

"I'm happy with all of the new boys who started the match, so I'm pleased with that and it shows we can rotate the squad around."

The original date for the match against the visitors was postponed due to a frozen pitch at Park View Road in January, but Day conceded Havant would have carried momentum from their match on Saturday.

Day said: "We've had three weeks of training and I was itching to get the game on.

"They had a game at the weekend and maybe came out of the blocks a bit faster, but we knew we had to adapt to that and match them, which we didn't, and we found ourselves a goal behind.

"But, credit to the boys that they've got us back into it in the second half with three good goals."

One sour note of the evening was the injury to right-back Loui Fazakerley, who was stretchered off in the first period after a late challenge from Havant striker Scott Jones.

Jones was sent off later on in the first-half for another late challenge, but Day admits it was too early to tell what the extent of the injury is to his full-back.

"He's gone to hospital and we'll assess him in the week - hopefully it's not too bad but we'll have to worry about that when we see him properly," expressed the boss.

"He's been excellent for me this year so hopefully we can get him back as soon as possible."

Day believes his side will need to win at least half of their remaining fixtures to claim a play-off position in the Blue Square South division, and hopes his side can stay there this season.

"I think we're going to need to win seven or eight games to make sure we get in the play-offs, but we said to the players that the season starts now," he revealed.

"We have 15 games left of a mini-season for us and we need to win half of them to secure that play-off place because we don't want to fade away like we did last season and miss out.

"We've been in there all year and we want to stay there."

The Wings travel to Dover Athletic on Saturday for another tough test, before travelling to strugglers Staines Town on Monday, and Day acknowledged the task his players will face.

He admitted: "Dover are in form - Nicky Forster and Steve Brown, since they've come in, have done really well and it's not going to be an easy place to go.

"We've got two tough games coming up, and Saturday in particular, we need to be at our best if we want to get anything.

"Away on a Monday night at Staines, we've got to be mentally prepared to do a job.

"They've had a couple of good results against bigger teams a month or so ago, so if we turn up and we're mentally ready, we'll hopefully get something from both games.

"Hopefully we'll be confident going down to Dover but we can't start like we did against Havant & Waterlooville or we'll be out of the game in the first half."

And with league leaders Woking seemingly out of sight, Day admitted he doesn't think anyone will catch them at the summit.

"I don't think we can catch them, they've done enough now and it would take a major blip for anyone to catch them," added the manager.

"I think they're around 14 points clear of Dartford and they've got a good enough squad to rotate it around.

"And if they do have a blip, they've got enough good players to rotate it to get themselves out of it.

"So, for me, I think it's over and we just need to get a play-off place. Dartford might say differently, but it's down to Woking to lose, and I don't think they will."
