There wasn't much joy for Bromley at Melbourne Park on Easter Monday afternoon, as Chelmsford City strengthened their bid for a play off place with a 2-0 victory over the Hayes Lane Club.

A very blustery swirling wind made conditions difficult for both sides, and Chelmsford took full advantage in the second half with their backs to the wind.

In an even first forty-five minutes, Wes Daly tried a dipping 30 yard drive in the 5th minute which flew over the crossbar, but Chelmsford responded five minutes later with a long throw from Takumi Ake which bounced in the area before Bromley’s goalkeeper, Paul Agu, finger tipped away from underneath the crossbar.

Ake, who caused problems to Bromley’s right back David Graves all afternoon, rounded Graves to cross where Agu moved smartly to deny John Martin’s shot with a diving save to the goalkeepers right.

Warren McBean shot wide after taking the ball past two defenders, before another long Ake throw caused havoc in the Bromley defence.

Wayne Gray miskicked in front of goal from yet another long throw from Ake, as the half ended goal less.

In the first minute of the second half Agu saved at point blank range from Ricky Modeste, when he pushed his firmly struck volley from 5 yards over the bar, but 2 minutes later Ake broke free before hitting the ball from one yard straight at Jerrome Sobers, to which the Referee reacted to the shouts for a penalty from the crowd behind the goal and awarded a spot kick, from which Gray put Chelmsford ahead.

Bromley were on the back foot from there on in, and found it hard going against the wind which had been picking up throughout, and after McBean had sent another shot over the crossbar Bromley then found themselves two goals down after 61 minutes.

Yet another long throw in by Ake was knocked back out to Martin, whose deep cross was headed home at the far post by an unmarked Adam Tann.

Daly sent a free kick over the defensive wall and over the bar on 65 minutes, and with five minutes remaining McBean turned his marker in the area only to see his strike rebound back off the crossbar.

Sandwiched in between, Ben Nunn tried a wind-assisted volley from 45 yards which Agu safely marshalled past the post and Nunn found himself in the six yard box following a back pass, but somehow contrived to put the ball over the bar with only Agu to beat.
