BROMLEY slumped to their fifth home league defeat since Christmas on Saturday in what was their worst display of the season so far against Staines.

Mid-table Staines fully deserved their win as Bromley failed to register a worthwhile shot on goal in the whole of the 90 minutes, although a visiting player nearly did the job for them in the second half.

Bromley enjoyed plenty of possession in the opening 20 minutes but failed miserably in the last quarter of the field.

The visitors rallied and gradually came into the picture.

Staines had the first attempt at goal on 25 minutes when Howard Newton was allowed to run at goal, only to shoot well wide of the intended target.

Two minutes later Bromley keeper Craig Holloway saved Rene Steer’s free-kick underneath the bar.

The only goal of the game came on 33 minutes from a corner on the left when Danny Gordon got the final touch after a complete shambles in the Bromley defence in which three defenders had the chance to clear their lines.

Bromley were forced into two substitutions on 36 minutes when Jerrome Sobers and Dean Lodge had to be replaced by Salifou Ibrahima and new signing Charlie Ide following hefty challenges.

But it made little difference to the home side’s play as the visitors had two chances before the interval to increase their lead.

Richard butler’s 42nd minute sharp shot found the side netting and on the stroke of the half-time Dwayne Lee’s curling shot from a short free-kick was just the wrong side of the upright.

The nearest Bromley came to scoring came three minutes after the break when Tony Finn’s long free-kick to the far post saw Staines' Simon Jackson slice his clearance towards goal.

Fortunately for him, Staines keeper Louis Wells dived smartly to save just as the ball was about to cross the line.

Bromley had a double let off on 52 minutes.

Firstly, Lee broke clear to cross but the sting on was taken out of the delivery by Craig Holloway, before the ball bounced agonisingly across the face of the goal for a corner.

From the corner a Lillywhites defender was adjusted to have handled and a penalty was awarded, which Butler lifted high over the bar.

Bromley did not take advantage of this let off and it was the visitors who continued to threaten.

Holloway brilliantly tipped over Marc Charles-Smith’s close range volley after the ball had dropped nicely at the striker's feet from a free-kick into the danger zone.

And the keeper was on hand again to deny Butler late on in the game when he dived to gather the former Bromley player's well-struck effort from just inside the 18-yard box.
