Superb finishes by Tyrone Sterling and Jack Clark saw Cray ease through to the second round of the Kent Senior Cup against a young Dover side who ran out of steam in the second half.

Even though Cray manager Ian Jenkins took the opportunity to rest some of his regular first team players, his starting eleven grew stronger as a unit the longer the game went on, and the winning margin could have been much bigger.

Dover had early chances to open the scoring, hitting the post with one effort, and troubling the home defence with some fast breakaway attacks.

Cray hadn't threatened very much in front of goal before they took the lead in the 35th minute. Carl Gibbs was pushed over in the box, and Tony Dolby fired home from the penalty spot.

Ben Hunt equalised for Dover following a good passing move three minutes later.

It became one-way traffic in the second half, as Cray's superior passing, movement and strength took its toll of the young Dover team on the wet and heavy pitch.

A clever pass from Ally McLeod put Gibbs in for a chance that was blocked by George Bevan's tackle in the goalmouth.

Gibbs set up a tap-in for Lewis Perkins that he shinned over the bar, and then the roles were reversed when Perkins squared the ball to Gibbs but he couldn't make contact.

Cray's pressure was rewarded after 69 minutes when Ebenezer Mesade skilfully held the ball deep on the right, before clipping a pass inside for Tyrone Sterling to surge into the box and land the ball in the far corner of the net with a curling shot that Lee Hook couldn't reach.

Four minutes later there was an equally spectacular goal for Cray fans to celebrate. From the right-hand edge of the penalty area, Jack Clark looped a free-kick high above the crowd of players in the goalmouth, and the ball dropped into the net at almost exactly the same place as Sterling's shot.

Cray relaxed and kept the ball well for the closing period of the game, and it was not until stoppage time that Dover forced Cray 'keeper Dave King into action, holding a snap-shot from substitute Conner Coyne.

Cray: King, McLeod, Clark, Lozano (Hamici 72), Dolby, Sterling, Gibbs, Saunders, Perkins, Phillips (Lover 82), Mesade (Cottrell 87). Subs not used: Day, Bentley.

Cray are at home to Kingstonian on Saturday (3pm).
