A GOAL five minutes from time by Leigh Bremner secured a hard-earned win for Cray Wanderers against Molesey in Saturday's Ryman League Division One match at Hayes Lane.

Despite the gluepot conditions, Cray sparkled with some five and six-man passing moves in the first-half, but their forwards could not find the target.

Jamie Wood and Matt Woolf both went close with early shots, but despite a stream of dangerous crosses from Drew Watkins and Jamie Kempster on the right, Cray were shut out by stubborn Molesey defending.

Cray nearly paid for their lack of finishing when Molesey almost took the lead following a corner-kick, but Sam Wood, guarding the post, kicked Donimic Gauci's effort off the line.

Play became scrappy after the interval, but Cray finally made their pressure tell in the 57th minute.

Bremner was sharp as a needle when he cut in from the right and thrashed in a low cross-shot to put Cray in front. However, the second half was much more even than the first and Molesey battled back to equalise on 76 minutes.

Mounting a swift counter-attack, the Wands were stung when, following good work by Sam Lampard, James Goodwin's low shot flew into the net off the unlucky Watkins.

It looked odds-on for Cray's 15th draw of the league season when up stepped Bremner with just five minutes left.

Sam Wood's fiercely-hit, low swerving shot was parried by the Molesey goalkeeper, but Bremner was on hand to net the rebound for his second goal of the game.

The result leaves Cray fifth in the table five points behind second-placed Horsham who they play at Hayes Lane this Saturday at 3pm.

Last night as we went to press, Cray were playing their rearranged Bryco Cup fourth-round tie away to Ryman league Division leaders AFC Wimbledon.

Next Tuesday, the Wands are away to Margate in the Kent Senior Cup quarter-final. The match is being played at Ashford Town FC's ground at 7.45pm.
