Cray Wanderers threw away a two-goal lead and allowed ten-man Folkestone Invicta to snatch a 2-2 draw in an incident-packed and ill-tempered FA Trophy second round tie at Hayes Lane on Saturday.

A scrappy first half was enlivened by goalkeepers Steve Northwood and Tony Kessell both making several fine saves.

Kessell was the busier of the two, just managing to hold free-kicks from Sam Wood and Matt Woolf, and diving to beat away stinging shots from Woolf and John Myatt.

Dryden, twice denied by Northwood in the first half, smacked a header against the post straight after the interval, and then on 48 minutes Cray broke the deadlock when Woolf met Sam Wood's free-kick with a fierce volley high into the net.

It looked to be all over for Folkestone when Scott Lindsay was sent off for a bad tackle on James Taylor, and then a dreadful mix-up between Kessell and his defenders presented Leigh Bremner with a free shot into an empty net from nearly 40 yards.

But with play becoming increasingly niggly and the referee seeming to take a lenient view or to miss some confrontations between opposing players, Folkestone stunned the Wands with late goals from Mark Munday and Andy Burke.

Myatt was red-carded for disputing the equalising goal, and then it was Cray who put in the stronger finish.

Ross Lover's forceful run ended with a shot going agonisingly close, Sam Wood's free-kick bounced just wide, and a frantic last-minute scramble ended with Folkestone desperately clearing the ball to safety.

The replay took place last night as we went to press, with the winners playing St Albans City at home in the next round on November 27.

During last midweek, the Wands lost for only the second time in the league this season when they went down 2-1 at home to Croydon Athletic.

Next Saturday, the Wands return to Ryman League Division One action when they visit Banstead Athletic, ahead of Tuesdays Bryco Cup second round tie against Croydon at Hayes Lane, which kicks off at 7.45pm.
