BASINGSTOKE Town deservedly completed the league double over Bromley at The Camrose on Tuesday evening in what was the Lillywhites' worst performance for more than five years.

The home side, who have now won just four league games all season, two of which have come against Bromley, adapted to the heavy conditions far better than their visitors.

But it might have been different had Ashley-Paul Robinson not squandered an open goal in the third minute. After a good run by Warren McBean put him in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, the custodian parried McBean’s shot.

The loose ball fell to Robinson who, instead of rolling into an empty net, chose to blast over the crossbar from eight yards.

From there on in, it was one-way traffic towards the Bromley goal. Sido Jombarty saw his shot roll agonisingly across the face of the goal before Alan Tait crashed a volley just over the crossbar. Rob Gillman cleared off the line and two efforts by Kevin Bossman, one a header, skimmed the crossbar and the other was well saved by Gareth Williams.

The hosts took the lead two minutes into the second half when Williams was slow to react to a Matt Warner long free-kick, allowing captain and centre half Joe Dolan to touch home.

Basingstoke continued to attack and Williams dropped a header before the danger was scrambled away, but the goalkeeper denied Bossman when he was quickly out to smother the striker after he found himself clear on goal.

The home side secured the points on 89 minutes. Again a long free-kick was not held by Williams and Ryan Dolby headed off the line at the expense of a corner. From the kick to the far post, Jombarty came in unchallenged to head firmly past Williams from about five yards.

It was no more than third from bottom Basingstoke deserved to ease their relegation worries.
