It wasn’t to be for Bromley as they were defeated on penalties by Brackley Town in their FA Trophy final clash with Brackley Town at Wembley.

Roger Johnson's own goal cancelled out Omar Bugiel’s opener in the 95th minute of the game to force extra time a boiling day.

Brackley substitute Andy Brown netted the winner in sudden-death as the Ravens missed twice from 12 yards away during the shootout.

The Bromley fans were brilliant

For a non-league club to bring more than 15,000 fans to Wembley is no small feat.

Amid the high temperatures, it was a perfect day for football and those who went nearly comprised of half the 31,430 who attended.

Singing in full pelt all 120 minutes, some clubs in English football’s top four divisions may envy how much support Bromley had.

It should have been a score draw

There was a hatful of chances for both Brackley and Bromley during this game, and if the teams had their way then there could have been four or more goals.

Goalkeeper David Gregory could only watch as a shot bounced off his foot and onto the post on the hour in a guilt-edge opportunity.

Deep into the game, with minutes left, Brandon Hanlan was denied by Brackley’s Danny Lewis after getting one-on-one with him.

It could – and perhaps should – have been 2-2 or even 3-3.

Neil Smith’s substitutions: were the timings appropriate?

In just over ten minutes shortly after the hour mark, Bromley had introduced three new players – Josh Rees, Brandon Hanlan, and Ben Chorley.

It could be the decisions were made because of injury concerns, given there were notable moments where a Bromley player went down either injured or fatigued.

However, tiredness showed during extra time and perhaps spacing out the substitutions more would have helped. Who knows?

Were Brackley the better team?

Kevin Wilkin’s men responded well after going a goal behind, and there was no shortage of opportunities to both equalise and take the lead.

The trio of James Armson, Glenn Walker, and Aaron Williams were relentless in forcing the issue – despite Bromley’s resolute defending.

While the Ravens had their chances, and there were a few, one could argue that Brackley slightly edged it.

One should not take away from the valiant effort the Hayes Lane club showed, not only get this far but also nearly win.

It has been a season patterned with overachieving, with the club threatening to clinch a play-off spot late on in the Vanarama National League.

Now it’s a test of time to see whether the club can still mount a challenge in competitions they’re participating in, others take a while to recover.
