Although relegation was no longer an issue, Welling United visited Bath City hoping to end their horrible away run.

It was not to be as the hosts cruised to a comfortable victory against a Wings team who paid scant regard for the travelling Welling supporters.

Three league victories away all season has given their followers little joy, and the performance in their final league game of the 2016-17 campaign summed up their season.

Nick McCootie shot wide from 25 yards then Welling gave the ball away allowing Naby Diallo to play in Marvin Morgan but he shot over when well placed.

Rhys Murrell-Williamson put a free kick just wide of the far post before firing in a shot that Max O'Leary saved.

After eighteen minutes, Bath went ahead. Andy Watkins sent McCootie away and when Phil Walsh failed to put in a challenge, the Bath striker fired home.

Six minutes later, the Romans scored again. Frankie Artis found Miles Welch-Hayes, who looked to be offside, and he squared for Watkins to finish.

Axel Andresson might have made it three from a free kick but Chris Lewington was equal to it with a good save.

Tyrone Marsh fired high and wide before Welling manager Alex Dyer made a double change after just 33 minutes. Marsh and Pierre Joseph-Dubois were taken off and replaced by Rickie Hayles and Dan Walker.

That seemed to settle Welling a little and a good flowing movement ended with an Alex Cathline shot that was saved comfortably by O'Leary.

After the break, total confusion at the back allowed Watkins to flick an effort at goal but Lewington got back to claim.

Sam Hatton managed to get a shot in, despite the poor positioning of the referee, but it was blocked out to Matt Fish who fired wide.

Jordan Brown, returning from injury, limped off to be replaced by Tom Richards as Welling used their last substitution.

Walsh did well to head out as Watkins close in again and then Billy Murphy curled wide when following up from a blocked shot.

Dean Leacock played his defensive team mates in further trouble with a weak back pass that allowed Watkins to round Lewington but Walsh got back to make the tackle as the Bath striker looked to strike home.

Hayles then made an equally important intervention off the toes of Morgan before Diablo curled in a shot that Lewington saved.

Somewhat against the run of play, Welling pulled one back with a screamer of a free kick by Hatton.

Murrell-Williamson, Welling's biggest threat, was off target but Bath had the last big chance when Watkins was set up only to see Lewington make an outstanding save.

Welling United: Lewington, Fish, Brown (Richards 55), Fuseini, Walsh, Leacock. Marsh (Walker 33), Hatton, Cathline, Joseph-Dubois (hayles 33), Murrell-Williamson. Subs not used: Slabber, Crawford.
