Bishop's Stortford 2-2 Welling United

Illness for Rickie Hayles and the absence of Dean Leacock for family reasons meant that Danny Waldren had to cover at centre back and Ali Fuseini was brought into midfield to cover.

Vas Karagiannis came in for his second Welling debut with Tom Richards dropping to the bench whilst other new signing Rhys Murrell-Williamson on the bench.

Luke Callendar had the first goal attempt but could only lift an effort that Chris Lewington claimed easily.

Adam Coombes then created space for a shot from the edge of the area but Harry Voss got down well to save.

Coombes again tried his luck from distance after a long run but fired wide.

Karagiannis was next to get a shot in but it was blocked by the head of a prone defender which caused him to require treatment.

After thirteen minute, Karagiannis broke the deadlock. Harry Crawford played the perfect pass to send him away and an excellent first touch put him in for an equally impressive finish.

Almost immediately the hosts should have equalised when Shomari Barnwell put in a low cross but Callendar fell over with the goal at his mercy.

Dan Walker then sent a diving header wide from a Coombes cross then Barnwell had a chance for Stortford but could not get any power in his shot.

Crawford then set up an opportunity for Walker but his shot flew well over.

Another Coombes drive had Voss beaten but it flew wide but Welling paid the cost of not scoring the second when Bishop's Stortford equalised.

Phil Walsh headed a corner back across goal and Callender rose to nod home.

Matt Fish sent a rasping drive just over from a clever Coombes lay back then Karagiannis set up a shooting chance with some trickery but fired over.

Just before the break, the hosts should have gone ahead. Aaron Greene hit a shot that thumped back off the post but Callendar somehow managed to knock the rebound over the top of the gaping net.

Early in the second period Walker fired high and wide from a half cleared corner but it was the hosts who went ahead in the 57th minute.

Again a corner caused problems for Welling and for the second time they left Callender alone to head home after it had been knocked on.

Murrell-Williamson was introduced for his debut with Ali Fuseini withdrawn. He took the right wing position and Karagiannis moved to the left and the latter put in a teasing cross that Coombes headed wide.

Newcomer Murrell-Williamson then tried his luck but fired well over before Welling had another big stroke of luck. The impressive Greene cut in and attempted a shot that Fish stretched to try and block but actually deflected onto the bar and over.

Jamie Slabber, who had a spell at Bishop's Stortford earlier in the season, came on for the hard working Harry Crawford as Welling played with their formation to try and find a quick equaliser..

Voss saved from Murrell-Williamson before former Wing Zach Fagan replaced Callendar as the hosts looked to strengthen midfield and catch Welling on the break.

Sam Hatton then caused havoc with a corner that looked as if it may have crossed the line before a defender scooped it out. Whether Welling players were appealing for a goal or handball proved irrelevant as the referee gave neither.

Fagan had a chance to put the game to bed but shot wide from Barnwell's pull back.

That proved costly as with two minutes remaining, Hatton swung in a free kick with enough zip to find the roof of the net.

As injury time approached, Hatton burst into the penalty area and was felled. The referee did not deem it as a foul or a dive and a fracas developed in which Antonio Lazzari appeared to head-butt the Welling player. After the mayhem had ended both players were sent off. They weren't alone in their dressing rooms for long as the final whistle was sounded soon after.
