Neil Smith hailed his side’s defensive performance as Bromley left Barrow with a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

The Cumbria outfit took the lead on 12 minutes when Byron Harrison fired past Alan Julian.

But the Ravens kept applying pressure and a point was secured when second-half substitute Blair Turgott beat stopper Joel Dixon with five minutes remaining.

Smith told the official Bromley website: “We had the chances very early on again.

“We started better than any game so far this season but we didn’t take the chance.

“Then they go up the other end and unfortunately Rob Swaine slips over and the player goes in one-on-one and he finished it well.

“But at half-time we believed we could get a result and I think it showed the commitment from a bunch of boys who believed in each other and were magnificent.

“We deserved a point at the very least. I thought we were fantastic overall.”

Barrow almost secured the win from a corner but Millwall striker Alfie Pavey made a fine clearance off the line.

Pavey joined Bromley last month on a three-month loan deal and has already played five games for Smith’s side.

The boss said: “I told Alfie that his clearance off the line was just as good as him scoring a goal.

“It was great and then Blair comes on, the keeper makes a mistake and the finish was what I would expect from a league player.”

Bromley wore black armbands for the National League fixture and a minute’s silence was held to remember Makayah McDermott, the U11 Bromley player who was killed in Penge last week.

Smith added: “Barrow were fantastic to let us show our respects for the tragedy that happened.

“The boys wanted to show their respect to the family of a local, young boy who had a great future ahead of him.

“In our small way, I hope we did that and showed how we feel not only as a club and a team, but as a community.

“We just want to make sure we’re there for the family and for the team he played for.”
