Hopes of winning their first points of the season soon faded for Welling United as they stumbled to another home defeat, this time at the hands of Weston-super-Mare.

Freak injuries before the game meant Oliver Sprague and Warren Whitely were unable to feature. Archie Johnson was drafted in for his full debut alongside new signing Dan Walker. Sam Hatton filled in for Sam Corne following his transfer to Braintree Town..

Walker had a chance to make an immediate impact when Jamie Slabber sent him through but Luke Purnell saved a half strength shot at full stretch.

Their eagerness to get ahead left them short numbered on a Weston break and Jordon Brown made a crucial tackle to keep the Seagulls out.

Dayle Grubb was fouled by Sean Francis on the edge of the area and made the most of it when deceiving Chris Lewington with the free kick to put Weston ahead.

Grubb burst through again but Lewington made a great block. Jake Mawford followed up but headed over.

Jordan Williams then sent Shawn McClousky away but Lewington made another fine save as Weston looked for a second.

Danny Waldren had a shot half blocked and Purnell was able to dive and save.

McClousky got free again but fired over before Slabber had a shot saved at the other end.

Sekani Simpson then chested a deep cross past Purnell, but the Seagulls goalkeeper was able to get back and save before it crossed the line.

As the half came to a close, the visitors claimed an all important second goal. Once again they got in behind when Mawford sent McClousky through and he drew out Lewington before slotting home.

Mark Goldberg made changes at the break, taking off Johnson and Slabber and bringing on Crawford and a further Welling debutant, Rickie Hayles.

Having scored earlier, Grubb had another opportunity with a free kick but blasted well over.

Pierre Joseph-Dubois shot well over with one effort then put another wide but, although sitting back and allowing Welling to pass the ball around in non threatening areas, Weston still had chances.

Jason Pope met a deep free kick almost unmarked but his volley lacked power and Lewington was able to save.

Sam Hatton fired over from the edge of the area and Walker had a long range effort that was easily saved.

Once more Walker broke through but had no assistance and Purnell was able to cover his near post effort.

Lewington was then called into action as McClousky broke through again.

Jonte Smith came on for Hatton as Welling looked for inspiration and Waldren had another deflected shot saved.

Mitchell Nelson found Crawford with a deep cross but he was unable to find the target with his header.

Further attacks were unsuccessful when Walker had a shot deflected wide and Purnell saved well from Crawford.

Joe McClennan shot well over and an Eliot Richards shot was easily saved as Weston saw out the final minutes comfortably.

The Wings are in action again on Tuesday with a visit to East Thurrock United.
